Key Stage 3
These three lessons designed specially for students in KS3 and in line with the National Curriculum allow students to plan routes to Antarctica and consider the practical and ethical questions they would be faced with. They will plan some virtual fieldwork, build confidence in using interactive map software and debate the impact of tourism in such a fragile ecosystem. These lessons are perfect for bringing ice-cool geography to life in the classroom!
Lesson 1: An expedition to Antarctica
In this introductory lesson, students will discuss why people might want to visit Antarctica and what practical and ethical questions are raised when planning a trip there. Through a fun game, they’ll identify the real-world opportunities and challenges involved in accessing such a remote region.
Lesson 2: Antarctica fieldtrip (virtual fieldwork)
Students take on the role of virtual field researchers, working through the stages of a fieldwork enquiry cycle. Using interactive mapping software, they will gain hands-on experience in digital geography tools.
Lesson 3: Tourism in fragile ecosystems
This lesson explores the environmental and ethical challenges of tourism in Antarctica, one of the world’s most fragile ecosystems. Students will evaluate the impacts of tourism and engage in a structured debate to develop their argumentation and critical thinking skills.
