Pebbel Penguin holding a Ticket to Antartica

The Royal Research Ship Sir David Attenborough set sail for Antarctica on Sunday 13 October 2024.

Almost 16,000 of you signed up, as individuals, families and schools, to be a part of this incredible journey. All these names were added to a time capsule that travelled with us to Rothera Research Station, where it will be displayed in our new Discovery Building.

A large red ship breaking through ice. The ship has a large green helideck at the front, and the upper decks are white. There are yellow cranes and winches on the aft deck. The ship has the name Sir David Attenborough written in large white letters along the bow.

Visit the ‘Travel Journal‘ page to follow the journey and meet the crew as they travel over 8,000 nautical miles to a frozen world. There, you’ll see icebergs, penguins and whales, and meet scientists and teams working in and around Antarctica.

British Antarctic Survey has five research stations, and in our updates you can see how our people live and work there – making discoveries about our planet and how it is changing.
